The goal of this project is to let people control their anxiety attacks by using the Breathin’ device. This will result in them not feeling inhibited to go to places, where they did not feel safe before.
Some people who have had traumatic experiences can now suffer from panic attacks, on which being afraid to go outside because they believe that the traumatic experience will happen again. When they are in situations that remind them of these traumatic experiences, panic attacks can occur. To combat this, they should focus on breathing as it helps to calm down. (Ziemann, Allen, Dahdaleh, Drebot, Coryell, Wunch, Lynch, Faraci, Howard, Weish and Wemmie, 2009) The Breathin’ device aims at helping people to do so. The device is a tool which inflates and deflates in accordance with the ideal respiratory rate to calm down.
The device has to be held in the user’s hand. The speed of the inflation and deflation will be measured by the nose device. This nose device measures the current respiratory rate. In this way, people can really focus on their breathing, and they will calm down by lowering their respiratory rate. Since they have to hold the tool in their hand, they feel when they have to breath in, because the tool inflates. When they have to breath out, the tool deflates. The design is made of wood, the inflation and deflation part of the design is soft to make the technical aspect of the inflation and deflation visual. The technical prototype of the product is visualized with a 12V DC air pump, an air valve and a balloon.
